THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE:

Von Roll America, Inc. operates one of the nation's premiere commercial waste treatment plants, providing approximately 60,000 tons of incineration capacity annually for all different types of hazardous materials. The company's employees accept, store and incinerate bulk solids, bulk liquids, various drums and containers, and lab packs. The entire facility encompasses over 1,000,000 square feet, from office buildings to state-of-the-art controls rooms to organic tank farms. Von Roll America was operating a 900 Mhz wireless network for data applications over a small portion of the facility at the time. They had recently concluded a study that determined that upgrades to the network to extend coverage to the entire site would increase productivity and reduce operating costs. Von Roll wanted to build in the capacity to add voice over wireless IP and 24x7 mobile data access for its employees. The challenges they had already experienced with their current network made it clear that a better wireless design was going to be imperative.

HELIUM'S SOLUTION:

The Von Roll facility is a difficult environment for radio wave propagation, with metal warehouses, scaffolding and large storage containers throughout the facility. A Helium service engineer rolled a Wireless Recon system around the site, on all the walkways and in areas where people might go. In the situations where multi-story buildings were involved, he used Wireless Recon's multi-level features. He also used detached mode for stairs and other areas not accessible to the SiteScout cart. Analysis showed that Von Roll could cut 9 AP's from their original plan. The Helium design was implemented, and coverage and capacity were very satisfactory.
